Mosaic and Fresco Masterclass

The mosaic-and-fresco masterclass takes place in a working artisanal studio in a historic Roman quarter, with two masters who have spent decades restoring church mosaics and basilica frescoes for the Soprintendenza. Two hours, hands on, with materials and techniques unchanged since the Renaissance. You leave with two finished pieces — a small mosaic on board and a fresco on lime plaster — that have been made by you under direct instruction, in a setting where the original Byzantine smalti and the fresco-grade lime come from the same suppliers used by the Vatican restoration workshops.

Why this masterclass matters

Most “art workshops” advertised in Rome are gift-shop exercises. Ours is the real craft, taught by professionals who actually restore monuments. The mosaic technique is Byzantine: gold-leaf smalti, marble tesserae, a setting bed of slow-curing lime mortar. The fresco technique is the buon fresco of the early Renaissance: pigment in water on wet plaster, with the chemical reaction that locks the colour into the wall as the lime carbonates. Neither can be learned in two hours — but in two hours, with masters present, both can be experienced authentically, and the small works you leave with are real mosaic and real fresco, not craft-shop simulations.

What is included

Full studio access for two hours, including all materials — Byzantine smalti, marble tesserae, mosaic adhesive, fresco lime plaster on small wooden panels, mineral pigments, brushes; instruction in both techniques by two practising masters with translation by Olga or her interpreter; a glass of Frascati Superiore or sparkling water in the studio; both finished pieces packed for transport home. The session is private to your party: no other group shares the studio during your slot.

Who it is for

Travellers who already know the major museums and want something that produces an object — a tangible memory of Rome that is not a postcard or a fridge magnet. Families with children aged eight and up: both techniques are perfectly accessible to children, and the resulting pieces become heirlooms. Art and design professionals who want to feel a technique they have only read about. Returning Romans who have done the canonical tours twice and now want a private morning that is not a tour at all.

Booking notes

Pricing is per group, not per person: 1–3 participants at €300 total, 4–6 at €500 total. Sessions are scheduled Tuesday–Saturday at 10:00 or 15:00; advance booking of at least one week is required as the studio is small. Best paired with our Borghese Gallery the same morning (for the mosaic context of Roman late antiquity) or with our pizza-and-gelato masterclass the following day for a thematic “Italian crafts” pair.

Questions we hear

Will the pieces survive transport? Yes; they are packed in protective foam. Do I need artistic experience? No — the masters adapt to absolute beginners. What language is the instruction in? Italian, with full simultaneous translation in English, Russian or French. Can the session be extended? Yes, to three or four hours, at €100 per additional hour for the whole group. Children below eight? Possible from six with a parent’s full participation.
