Bracciano: The Volcanic Lake and Its Hidden Caves
Lake Bracciano is most often visited by day-trippers for the Castello Odescalchi and the lakefront lunch. For the traveller in search of the slower, more naturalistic Bracciano — the volcanic caves of the southern shore, the dive sites of the central deep, the sunset cruise on the still lake under the August moon — there is a second Bracciano that escapes the standard itinerary. The volcanic-and-cave day, ideally taken on a calm summer afternoon, is one of the most quietly remarkable single days available within an hour of Rome.
The volcanic geology of the southern shore
Lake Bracciano fills the second-largest volcanic crater in the Lazio region — a fifty-seven-square-kilometre caldera last active about 40,000 years ago. The southern shore, between Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano, is the most geologically active section: small thermal springs surface at the lake’s edge, the cliffs are composed of compacted volcanic tuff, and three natural caves — the Grotta del Lago, the Grotta dell’Inferno, and the Grotta del Diavolo — extend into the rock above the water line. The caves were inhabited in the Neolithic, then used in the Etruscan period as sanctuaries; the Grotta del Lago contains rock-cut votive niches dating to the 7th century BC. Private cave visits are arranged with a local archaeologist; access is by small boat from the village of Anguillara.
The Anguillara Sabazia village and the lunch
Anguillara Sabazia is the smallest and most quietly elegant of the three lake villages. The medieval main street descends from the 9th-century watchtower to the lakefront in five minutes; the principal restaurant is the Trattoria del Lago, whose lake-fish menu (coregone, persico, anguilla affumicata) is paired with the Bracciano-shore Cesanese. The lunch is taken in the small dining-room overlooking the lake, with the volcanic cliffs of the southern shore visible across the water. The lunch takes ninety minutes.
The sunset cruise: a private electric boat at the magic hour
The most quietly memorable element of the day is the private sunset cruise on a small electric boat — the Caccialepri family’s «Acquarella», eight metres long, capable of holding six guests in deep wicker armchairs under a canvas canopy. The boat departs from Trevignano at one hour before sunset; the route follows the northern shore to the volcanic cliffs, then crosses the lake to the southern caves, then returns to Trevignano at the moment when the silhouette of the Castello Odescalchi catches the last gold of the western light. The cruise takes ninety minutes; the boat is provisioned with the Frascati Superiore and a small board of local cheeses.
Combinations
The Bracciano volcanic day combines with our Odescalchi Castle day as the two-day Bracciano programme — the castle morning, the volcanic afternoon, the sunset cruise to close the second day. For guests who would prefer to see the volcanic system from the air, we propose our VIP helicopter tour over the volcanic lakes. The day is also available through our Tour of the Roman Castles as the lake-and-cave extension.
